Skimming Wells: Current Practices & Guidelines for Improving Design & Operation
By
Muhammad Mazhar Saeed
The Higher Education Commission has recently published two books in the discipline of Engineering and Social Sciences under its Monograph & Textbook Writing Scheme.
The first book on “Skimming Wells: Current Practices & Guidelines for Improving Design & Operation” is written by Dr. Muhammad Mazhar Saeed. The scope of the monograph is limited to the hydro-geological environment in the Indus Basin. Existing groundwater extraction practices and techniques have been discussed with reference to their use for extracting groundwater for irrigation purposes. The guidelines presented in this monographs are site specific.
The monograph consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the irrigation system in the Indus Basin, description of hydrogeology of the aquifer under the Indus Basin, and the rationale of the problem. Chapter 2 discusses the various options and techniques being applied to extract freshwater layer over the saline groundwater in the Indus Basin. This chapter critically reviews the studies conducted in Pakistan using these options.
Chapter 3 describes a comprehensive research study conducted in the Indus Basin to investigate the existing farmers’ practices to extract groundwater and to monitor the hydraulic and hydro-salinity behavior of skimming wells under different pumping regimes. Chapter 4 describes the factors affecting design and operation of skimming wells and their interdependence upon the each other. The final chapter describes the design and operational guidelines developed using simulation results and observations from the field studies. The price of book is Rs. 120/-.
Abridged Contents: Introduction of the irrigation system, Skimming Well practices in the Indus Basin, Hydraulic and Hydrosalinity behaviour of Skimming Wells, Factors affecting design and operation of Skimming Wells, Recommendation for design and operaton of Skimming Wells
Target Readership: Graduate students of Civil Engineering
